Aside from the real server being much quieter, another upgrade was from Blackberry Enterprise Server or BES 4.1 to Blackberry Enterprise Server Express BES 5.0.

Suffice to say; I'm utterly thrilled!

The installation process was simply put…EASY; especially when compared to installing BES 4.1.

Since I already had the ports forwarded from the previous version I didn’t need to recreate those. I also did not need the defacto besadmin account. I simply installed the software and with the new web interface was up and running in approximately 15 minutes.

While I don’t intend to go in depth and get into the nitty gritty technical details I will say the following:

Windows Server 2003 or higher

2GB RAM or more [on servers this just makes plain ol sense]

Adjust the Default IT Policy to ensure Web Browsing will work

Use your Providers Internet for web browsing versus BB as I’ve noticed increased speed and functionality.

The upgrade dramatically improves the email look and feel and displays like Outlook.

I did experience an issue with my contacts sync’ing but with one tweak they appeared.

Have a wonderful June!

"Adware, Malware, Spyware o My!"

PC running slow. You've checked the lease and reviewed your monthly payments and are all set!

Or are you?

There are many hidden costs to moving from say a home office into commercial office or from one office to another that a business owner must be aware of. While definitely not an all in composing guide I will cover some of the bigger ticket items that will save you major headaches later on. Let's roll!

Internet Capable versus Internet Ready; is there really a difference?

Just because an office has internet or you have an ISP doesn't mean its internet ready. Often times the impression is simply I will move my equipment from location A to B and everything should work. In majority of cases; the office is not internet ready regardless of your monthly payment arrangement. What do I mean?

The previous tenant in most cases owns any and all equipment that allows them to connect to the internet from their internal network or LAN back. This can include 66 blocks [long orange rectangle block used for phone connections]; Routers, Switches, etc. Often times what a new tenant is greeted with is a bunch of wires that "may" extend down from the ceiling only.

Your ISP or Internet Service Provider DOES NOT provide internal wiring services.

Regardless of your ISP; they ensure you have the equipment to connect; such as a Cable Modem or DSL device. If your ISP provides T1 service; they will typically wire the line to what is called the Demarc and potentially provide a router. There are two definitions of "demarc" which are truly applicable regardless of office type [home or commercial]:

"Demarcation point is the point at which the telephone company network ends and connects with the wiring at the customer premises or it is the terminating point on a customer premise where the LEC's or ISP's responsibility for service ends and the customer's begins."

It is crucial to understand that your ISP is responsible for providing access through their network; not the internal LAN equipment you will need to connect.

So let's break these down even further into bottom-line costs and who pays for what. And it's truly rather simple on who pays for what.

The business pays for it all.

If you move; you pay to have the ISP services moved from one location to another.

If the new location needs wiring [90% or more always do]; that is another cost.

If you are switching ISP's; you will incur disconnect and setup costs unless otherwise previously negotiated.

If you are not setting up your systems [router, switch, server, computers, printers, faxes, etc] in the new location; an IT person needs to.

These are just SOME of the potential expenses one can occur when moving. The cost of expenses will vary based on many variables. When considering office space I advise the following BEFORE signing a lease:

Bring an IT Consultant along [call Big G @ 763-390-1317]. A word of caution; just because someone knows how to "fix" a PC doesn't make them an IT Consultant any more then someone changing car oil doesn't make them an "Auto Mechanic".

Understand and clearly define with the Landlord what the status of the wiring is and who is responsible for what. In Executive Suite type situations these offices are typically Internet Ready BUT clarify how phones work.

Understand what your ISP will and will not do and what you are paying for. Remember the salesperson's job is to close the deal; not verify that you understand you need to pay for any internal wiring.

Hopefully these few tips will allow your next move to go a lot more smoothly and reduce the potential for sticker shock.

Feel free to refer those who are moving to me as I can assist and ensure their move goes smoothly. One of the services I provide is, not only ISP selection based upon your business needs but also serve as Project Manager for the move; coordinating all aspects of the IT side of things; so you the business owner can focus on running your business.

Quick Big G Buying Tip

Just did this for a client and wanted to share:

Which is the better deal? That the battery doesn't hold the charge like it should?

Well the answer is rather simple and it's called "Quick Pull" and it’s a must have for the BB user.

Quick Pull Lite or the Free Version can be downloaded from Blackberry App World via Sprint or Verizon's equivalent. This cool little App simulates pulling the battery from your BB which resets the device [no loss of data]; frees up memory, etc. A very cool feature is that if you turn off your BB each night [highly recommended to improve battery life and maintaining a full charge]; and schedule your Quick Pull to perform a battery reset at say 5:30am each morning; this process will cause your BB to reset and be rebooted [i.e. ON] upon your arrival.

The installation and configuration process is rather straight-forward which makes this App a MUST HAVE for BB Users.

To learn more about Quick Pull visit: http://steelthorn.com/

Enjoy and Happy New Year!

Xobni - A New Star Trek Race or Cool Outlook Plugin?

A client who uses Outlook like none I know recently referred me to an App called Xobni. Admittedly hesitant at first; I've come to enjoy this little tool. With its all inclusive features it's sure to be a hit for other avid Outlook users. So let's proceed onward with Big G's review of Xobni!

Xobni is a comprehensive search and index tool that works with MS Outlook. Unlike some that only integrate various Outlook features; this one goes quite a few steps beyond and incorporates Social Networking aspects that many are sure to love.

One of the first things I look at when evaluating Outlook Plug-in Applications is not only the ease of installation; but does the application play nice after it's completed. Overall Xobni installed well and played nice. There was some initial degradation in performance but I suspected that had to do with the initial indexing of my Outlook emails, etc.

The other aspect and this is big for some; is that Xobni can be a screen hog unless minimized to the side. If you’re used to having the reading pane available along with the other normal Outlook views; it can get crowded very quickly. After playing with it for a few days, I simply ran with it minimized to the right. A very nice feature is that even minimized; the necessary functionality remained.

The layout is easy to understand which contains a section called “Conversations” and “Files Exchanged”. The Conversations portion is a nice word change for the various emails that have transpired. The Files Exchange show all the attachments and respective dates in which the files were sent. I personally like the separation as it allows me to look for which part I need versus having to find the email first and attachment second. The really neat feature of how these work though is that as you scroll through emails; Xobni changes to reflect what it has previously indexed.

But wait there’s more and this is probably one of the coolest parts and what I think separates it from the competition.

With all the buzz about Social Networking; Xobni incorporates Linked In, Twitter, and Facebook into one spot! During the setup portion; you simply allow Xobni to sign in using your credentials and WHAMO; your email has now become an extension of your Social Networking Marketing Plan.

So now when scrolling through emails [weither you know the person or not] you will see and have access to whatever information or main photos are being used within Linked In, Twitter, or Facebook. The photo feature is a very nice touch as it personalizes the contact and allows one to relate more readily. If you are in sales and have a photo; it puts a face to the person you may be speaking with. For those concerned about privacy issues; it only displays whatever already exists within these environments.

In the end I find Xobni a useful tool that plays nice with Outlook. While I’m not the biggest Outlook user in one sense; when I needed to find an attachment; its search feature allowed me to track it down in no time; much better than others I’ve used.
We give it 9 out of 10 G’s!

You can learn more about Xobni by visiting http://www.xobni.com/.

Winter Tech Tip!

Whoosh!

Just like that and seemingly overnight, Winter has officially arrived!

Did you know that cold weather doesn't harm your laptop?

However, the potential condensation [moisture] once it's put into a warmer environment can be the issue. So say you left your laptop in the freezing car overnight? What then?

Here are our recommended tips...

1. Wait 10-15 minutes before turning it on.
2. The first is for OS or Operating System and second for MS Office. The updates check and validate that the OS [XP or Vista] or MS Office version [2003 or 2007] installed are legitimate and licensed.

The process of validation is simple. The Genuine Advantage Update is included in the normal Microsoft Updates. Once installed; it privately checks your OS or copy of Office to ensure that the license used meets and passes the Microsoft validation process. If it does, you proceed as normal. In the event of failure, a pop-up notification advises you of the failure and provides steps to immediately resolve.

It is especially important for Residential, Small/Home-based to Medium size business to ensure that their software is truly legitimate. The typical scenario Big G Tech Support has encountered is a “tech savvy friend” or “IT Buddy” installed a copy for a customer in the course of repair or upgrade. They're not positive where they will go. 1 John 5:12-13 says, "He who has the Son has life; and he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."It is a common misconception that by being baptized or doing good works, you will be guaranteed a place in heaven. Jesus said in John 3:3, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man or woman be born again, he/she cannot see the kingdom of God." It is not what we have done, but God has done for us that will secure our salvation. Ephesians 2:8 says, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God." Eternal life, or salvation, is a free gift from God - you can't earn it.

It takes more than just believing there is a God to secure salvation. The Bible says that even the demons in hell believe there is a God, and yet, they will not be saved. The answer is in Romans 10:9-10; "That if thou shalt confess [make a public profession] with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man/woman believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Salvation comes through believing that Jesus is the Son of God and confessing Him as Lord.

If you believe Jesus is the Son of God and that He died or your sins and rose again, you can know for sure that you'll go to heaven. If you pray the prayer below, and mean it with your heart, you will be saved and know that you have eternal life.

Pray this Prayer:

"God in Heaven, I know I'm a sinner and I need Your help. I believe in my heart that Jesus Christ is Your Son, the He died on the Cross for my sins and God raised Him from the dead. Jesus, right now I open my heart and invite You to come in. Make Yourself real to me. Take control of my life. Keep me from evil and make me the person You want me to be. Be my Lord and Saviour.

Additional:

1. Read God's Word every day. Start by reading the Gospel of John over and over. The Bible will have new meaning to you.
2. Pray and take time every day to kneel down and praise Him. Talk to God just as you would any other person.
3. Seek Fellowship with other born-again Christians.
4. Attend church regularly. Hebrews 10:25 says, "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Big G Tech Support's Lease Return Sale!!

Desktops, Monitors, Laptops, Servers, Printers, Mac’s, All-in-One’s, and MORE!!!

Standard Features on Equipment:

· 30-day Hardware warranty
· COA for Windows XP Professional SP2 [Desktops/Laptops ONLY]
· Windows XP SP2 OS Installed [Desktops/Laptops ONLY]
· Keyboard/Mouse included

Big G Tech Support Installation Package $95.00
Pickup &
